Josh Tutt Announces Run for Office in Texas Senate District 18, Ending Campaign in House District 17

SOMERVILLE, TX — Community activist and Texas House District 17 candidate Josh Tutt announced his decision today to conclude his campaign in HD-17 in order to run for the office of State Senate in District 18, which covers 18 counties extending from the greater Houston area to the Central and Gulf Coast regions of the state.

“This decision was made with great consideration and care for the people in my community. The fact of the matter is that SD-18’s current Senator, Republican Lois Kolkhorst, has never had a serious challenger in any primary or general Senate election, despite her long track record of harmful legislation against Texas’ most vulnerable communities,” Tutt said.

“In the past week, a number of community leaders have reached out to me—including members of the Texas State Democratic Executive Committee—urging me to run in SD-18 because we need a strong candidate who can challenge Kolkhorst in the general election in 2022. As an openly gay, progressive, grassroots activist with a vested interest in seeing our rural communities thrive, I’m prepared to answer that call today.”

With regard to House District 17, Tutt said, “It’s a rare and exciting thing for us to have two progressive Democrats running in an election in rural Texas. Madeline Eden is an incredible candidate with an amazing track record of activism and advocacy in our community. I know HD-17 is in good hands with Madeline in the fight.”

Josh Tutt is the Vice President of Pride Community Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing resources and support to the Brazos Valley’s LGBTQIA+ community. He also serves as Secretary for the Texas Young Democrats Rural Caucus.
